Cider and Perry Lists
The range of cider and perry at Reading has just got bigger!
Over 200 Ciders and Perries for 2009
If you thought the 150 we had last year wasn't enough, we?ve added over 50 more to be put on sale on the Saturday. These are highlighted in the list below and will not be available on Thursday and Friday (there isn't room on the stillage for them, so even if you wanted one early the staff wouldn't be able to find it).
These have been added both to increase the range we can have at the festival (whilst still leaving room for the beer!) and to increase the number available on the Saturday and Sunday. We know there has been a problem with running out early in the last few years and have ordered a vast amount more, so do your best to rise to the challenge of drinking it all again.
Cider is fermented apple juice and perry is fermented pear juice. Perry is made from specialist perry pears and cider from a mixture of specialist cider apples and eating apples.
As usual, the cider and perry bar is in the second tent and we have a number of local producers represented. This year we have gained another Berkshire producer, Tutts Clump, with Wyatt?s and Cidernicks also represented. Unfortunately we didn?t increase to four this year as for the first time in years we haven?t got any Lambourn Valley. This is because it was an off year for the perry pear tree (it fruits in alternate years). We also have Upton Cider from South Oxfordshire, who have won awards at the national champion cider competitions for their sweet cider.
For the seventh year, Reading Beer and Cider Festival is proud to be hosting CAMRA?s National Champion Cider and Perry Judging. The gold silver and bronze ciders and perries will be announced at about 3.30pm on Saturday ? will you agree with the judges? decisions?
If you have some time free on Friday between 12 and 4pm then you can volunteer to take part in a preliminary judging panel. The only qualification is liking cider or perry. If you want to join in, go to the cider and perry bar and you?ll be allocated to a panel and given a time for judging. Each panel takes about 45 minutes.
Perries are highlighted in this list with a green background to help you spot them. The cask end labels also distinguish between cider and perry - yellow for cider and green for perry.
If you?re not sure where to start with such a range and choice, talk to the volunteer bar staff. As long as they?re not too busy they may be able to offer you a sample before you buy, so you can work out if you prefer dry, medium or sweet ciders or perries.
The producer descriptions have been collected from a range of sources including CAMRA?s Good Cider Guide and two excellent websites for cider information: UK cider and
Old Scrump?s Cider House.
