Cider and Perry
Another year, another Reading festival, another huge range of real cider and perry!
Once again Reading has the largest selection of draught cider and perry anywhere in the country. Last year saw a selection of over 200, this year (assuming everything arrives) we will have 220! As before we are limited by the size of the stillage, so while we will open on Thursday with 150, the remaining 70 will be held back to be put on sale on Saturday. These are highlighted in the list below and will not be available on Thursday and Friday. Yet again the overall volume has increased - this year to more than 13,000 pints - so do your best to rise to the challenge of drinking it all again.
Cider is fermented apple juice and perry is fermented pear juice. Depending on the style, cider can be made from a mixture of dessert apple varieties (eg Cox, Gala, Discovery) and cooking apple varieties (eg Bramley), or from specialist cider apples. Cider apples are smaller and harder than cookers or eaters, but produce excellent juice for cidermaking. Perry is usually made from specialist perry pear varieties - unsuitable for eating - but eating varieties have been known to be included.
Ciders and perries are usually made from blends of many different apple or pear varieties, but you will see some which use a single variety, indicated by 'SV'. Blends tend to produce a more rounded product by mixing flavour elements from the different varieties, but there are some varieties which hold up well on their own, such as Kingston Black apples or Blakeney Red pears. See if you can spot the pider - made from a blend of apple and pear juices.
This year's bar boasts a fine selection of cider and perry from local producers. There are eight producers within 30 miles of the festival represented, and these are indicated with green highlighting in the list below. I'm happy to say that we have cider from all four Berkshire producers this year, and both Tutts Clump and Lambourn Valley have perry.
For the eighth year, Reading Beer and Cider Festival is proud to be hosting CAMRA's National Champion Cider and Perry Judging. The gold silver and bronze ciders and perries will be announced at about 3.30pm on Saturday - will you agree with the judges' decisions?
If you have some time free on Friday between 12 and 4pm then you can volunteer to take part in a preliminary judging panel. The only qualification is liking cider or perry. If you want to join in, go to the cider and perry bar and you'll be allocated to a panel and given a time for judging. Each panel takes about 45 minutes.
To bring the Reading cider bar in line with those at other CAMRA festivals, the colour coding is changing this year. Perries are highlighted in this list with a yellow background to help you spot them. The cask end labels also distinguish between cider and perry - green for cider and yellow for perry.
If you're not sure where to start with such a range and choice, talk to the volunteer bar staff. As long as they're not too busy they may be able to offer you a sample before you buy, so you can work out if you prefer dry, medium or sweet ciders or perries. We have cider producers and wholesalers, members of CAMRA's Cider and Perry Committee and general cider enthusiasts behind the bar, so rest assured that you can be guided by a knowledgeable team.
The ciders and perries come from all over the country to the Reading beer festival! To see where this year's stock has come from, click on the map on the right.
