English Wine

To borrow a Monty Python phrase, 'What have the Romans ever done for us?' Wine was introduced into Britain during the Roman occupation. While for a long period quality wines were hard to come by, there are now many excellent vineyards and wineries in the UK. Our wines are gaining worldwide acclaim and some sparkling wines in particular have won many international awards.

It is not solely grapes that can be used to make wine. In order to distinguish between grape wines and wines made from other sources, the term "country wines" is used (as "fruit wine" could be confusing and, often, misleading). Country wines can be made from all manner of ingredients; fruits are the most common, but there are varieties made from sugar-rich vegetables (such as parsnip) and even the leaves and bark of trees.

We also have the ever popular mead. While many people tend to associate mead with medieval banquets (and why not?), this honey-based beverage is in fact the world's oldest fermented drink.
